John Lennon once said that when one of the Beatles needed a new swimming pool, a new vacation home or even money for an alimony payment - they wrote a new song. Their true wealth was not in the songs they had written or the performances they were paid to perform – but instead was their ability to write new songs to create new revenue.

You need to structure your online business the exact same way. If your revenue stream or income is dependent on a single supplier, or even a job then you are not truly wealthy or creating true wealth. If the job ends or the supplier providing the product decides to stop supplying you product then you are out of business.

A perfect example of this was in the last 12 months, eBay has decided to significantly reduce the number of affiliates that were in their system. Basically the eBay affiliate worked like this: If you drove someone to eBay via an email or banner on your site you got a percentage of what they purchased on eBay. For those of you that have followed the financial performance of eBay as a company knows that their stock has been under tremendous pressure the last few years and they needed to make cuts in their overhead. From this financial perspective you really can not fault eBay for making this change. Who, in 2010, has not heard of eBay?

For days after, the eBay forum was full of very upset people with incredible stories. The one that sticks out was from Mary. Mary had spent years building up traffic to her site where she listed eBay product for sale. She had actually built up her monthly eBay affiliate earnings
to over $10,000. She had finally convinced her husband to allow her to quit her day job and focus on her eBay business. Two days later – BOOM.. eBay notified her she was done. Thanks for playing but we do not need you know more. It was one of the most heartfelt and painful emails to read. For those of you who blame eBay for this – do not. They had every right and clearly listed in their affiliate terms and conditions that they could terminate the agreement at any time. eBay paid her every dime they owed her and paid her on time.

The problem was Mary’s. Mary was truly putting all of her eggs in one basket and even worse; she put her financial well being in the hands of someone else. If I was able to reach out to Mary I would have given her a verbal slap to the face and have her step back and look at the real bright side of this story. In order to build that much affiliate income per month she had inadvertently learned some incredible skills. This was the skill on how to drive traffic to an affiliate offer. Mary was thinking of herself as an eBay expert where in fact she had become an affiliate marketing expert.

All Mary needed to do was simply find other programs that paid her for converting traffic and drive people to that site instead. The list would start with Amazon and I can think of 24 other programs without even breaking a mental sweat. She should have been using an offer rotator on her site to begin with to see which offers converted as well as or even better than eBay.

The bottom line is if you learn how to market online and get traffic to your site then you are on the path to truly becoming wealthy and you will never have to rely on anyone else for your next paycheck.
